- My new Supra Sonic modem seems to change the DTE (modem-to-computer) speed
- as soon as it establishes the connection, if the connection speed is
- less than the original DTE speed (the speed of the computer port when I
- issued the AT commands to make the call). How do I disable this?
-
-
- When I set my line speed to 19200 and connect at less than 19200 (14400,
- 12000, or 9600), or when I set my line speed to 38400 (connecting at 21600,
- 19200, or 9600)), I get garbage characters after the CONNECT/CARRIER/etc.
- messages. (Sometimes I don't get the CONNECT/etc. messages at all.)
-
- If I set the line speed to 19200 and connect at 19200, it works fine. If
- I set the line speed to 9600, it connects at 9600, and works fine.
-
- It seems that the modem is changing the DTE speed. Analyzing the bit pat-
- terns of the garbage characters seems to confirm this. It looks like the
- modem is changing the DTE speed to match the DCE speed. (The garbage is
- relatively repeatable, and DTE 19200/DCE 9600 and DTE 38400/DCE 19200 give
- the same garbage, and it correlates to receiving "\nCONNECT..." at
- double the transmitted baud rate.)
-
- Is this speed change normal? How can I disable it? (How can I lock the
- DTE speed to the AT command speed the modem already locked onto?)
-
- I understand that for dial-_in_, one protocol is for the modem to report
- "RING" and "CONNECT xxx" messages to the computer (to the getty program on
- Unix) at one speed, and then switch to the xxx speed. The getty program
- recognizes the messages and changes the computer port to the xxx speed, and
- they continue communicating.
-
- However, I'm doing dial-_out_. Modems doesn't usually change the DTE speed
- for outward calls, do they?
-
-
- Does anyone know if this speed change is intentional? If it is, how do I
- disable it? Also, is there a way to set the DTE speed and lock it there?
-
- Thanks,
- Daniel
